For centuries, these peaks served as mighty ramparts, shielding valley dwellers from invaders, protecting ancientcustoms and, above all, preserving legends as old as anyone might dare to guess.
At many of these sites, the stress is as much on re-enactment as it is on living history, which incorporates a more pedagogical approach to learning about ancientcustoms.
Indeed very little has changed in the last century: swidden (slash and burn) farming and ancientcustoms are still observed, and the shaman still holds sway in most villages, despite the presence of mobile phones and satellite TV.
